2027 - RYA Youth Leader Inland Waterways Helmsman (2 day)

Description

Young Leaders Residential RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Course

Two days of practical boating, an overnight adventure and Skills for Life!
Designed for Scout Young Leaders aged 16 and over, this residential course combines the nationally recognised RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman qualification with South West Herts Narrowboat Trust's Get Residential Ready programme.
It's a fantastic opportunity to develop practical boating skills, confidence and leadership experience, helping prepare the next generation of young people to support and lead narrowboating adventures.

RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Training

The RYA's two-day course is designed to give participants the confidence and practical skills to helm a narrowboat safely on inland waterways.
The first day focuses mainly on instruction and developing practical skills, while the second provides opportunities to demonstrate their understanding and abilities.
Topics covered include:
  • Boat handling and care
  • Lock operation and ropework
  • Personal and boat safety
  • Care of the waterways and environment
  • Working safely and effectively as a crew

The Residential Experience

Participants stay overnight aboard one of the Trust's narrowboats, experiencing life afloat while developing independence, teamwork and confidence.
On Saturday evening, participants take part in the Trust's Get Residential Ready programme, exploring what it takes to organise and deliver a successful youth narrowboating residential.
This includes route planning, budgeting, catering, risk management, leadership and looking after others.

Building Skills for Life

This course is about much more than gaining a qualification. It aims to give young people the skills, confidence and experience to help deliver future narrowboating adventures.
The RYA qualification also provides an excellent foundation for those wishing to work towards a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit, subject to the relevant age, experience and assessment requirements.
By investing in young people today, we hope to develop a wider network of skilled young volunteers who can support boating activities, camps and residential adventures for years to come.

  • Overnight accommodation aboard a Trust narrowboat
